Training

No experience? No problem.

Boating can be a relaxing, challenging and rewarding sport, but if conditions get ugly or there is an emergency on the water we want to ensure all our Members have the skills and confidence to handle it safely. We recognize that learning to safely operate a boat is not a day or weekend course. Safe boating and good seamanship are a compilation of skills, techniques and confidence built up over time through experience.

Each of our Members is required to complete a WindPath authorized local training program or document five years of experience on a boat of similar size before taking out a WindPath boat on their own. Each of our locations runs, or works closely with an accredited program like those offered by US Sailing, The American Sailing Association, or the United States Power Squadron. For an example of a typical course please choose an organization below:

Upon completion of your training course you will have earned the appropriate certification and be qualified to pilot your yacht safely. WindPath staff will provide one day orientations on the boat you will be operating, and then will continue to work with you until you are comfortable piloting your yacht safely on your own.

Do not be dissuaded by the fact that you don't know how to operate a boat; learning with WindPath is a fun and rewarding experience that anyone can do.

In addition to your regular training program the following will be provided by WindPath staff on your yacht:

  • A boat systems review for the yacht you will be piloting
  • A local waterway review to ensure you are familiar with local navigation hazards
  • A docking course
  • Yacht safety equipment and procedures review

If you are an experienced boater who feels confident piloting a yacht safely on your own, and can demonstrate this to WindPath staff, you may be able to opt out of the training program, and be eligible for a discount on your initiation fees.
