The WindPath Fractional Yachting Team

Blake Middleton

Location: Charleston, SC
Role: Base Owner
WindPath Site: WindPath.com/charleston

Blake, an enthusiastic sailor, never misses an opportunity to be on the water.  He has sailed on small boats most of his life, and in recent years has discovered big boat racing and cruising.  He saw WindPath as an opportunity to operate a business based on one of the passions in his life.  He recently introduced his wife to sailing, and together they have a 2 year old who also loves being out in the "big boat".  Charleston offers all types of sailing, and they are grateful to live in such a beautiful part of the country.

I have been sailing for about 25 years.  I learned to sail on a 16' Precision on lakes in Ohio.  I sailed with my brother in Fort Myers on his OLD 27' sloop and discovered the reality of sailing old boats-something was always breaking!  We even lost a rudder on the way to Key West!  When I retired and moved to Fort Myers, I wanted to sail more and take our guests.  I considered buying a Catalina for a charter operation, then discovered WindPath Sailing.  After checking out the program, I knew I would like to join as a member or owner-member.  Since there were no Fractional Sailing opportunities here, I opened the first Florida base on Charlotte Harbor and opened a St. Pete base with the help of Stew Hibbins at International Sailing School in the fall of 2008.  I live in Fort Myers and tell folks I love my new office in the cockpit of a Catalina 350!

I started sailing 35 years ago as a kid sailing with my parents and friends on the Black Sea in Eastern Europe. I have been sailing my own boats for the past 20 years on the West Coast of the United States. I have sailed from Seattle to Cabo San Lucas and the Sea of Cortez. My wife and two kids are also hooked on sailing. When I heard about the WindPath program, I instantly knew that this is what I want to do, and I opened the first base on the West Coast. It allows me to stay close to my dearest hobby...

I've spent the last 30 years as a professional sailor on the Bay. I'm a licensed 200 ton oceans master, one of 40 American Sailing Association Instructor Evaluators worldwide, a crazy musician, sailor and dad of three of the best little sailors on earth.  I'm on the water 200 days a year on a wide variety of boats, from large schooners and catamarans to state of the art race boats to the simple 22 foot daysailors. It's ALL good. There's not a DAY goes by that I don't learn something new about sailing. WindPath is the most exciting sailing program I've seen in a very long time. It's the perfect way to NOT own a boat. Affordable, easy and convenient.

Ian, a USCG Licensed Master Mariner, is the founder and president of WindPath Fractional Yachting. With a strong background in both technology and management Ian left the corporate world for something a little simpler. In early 2005 he founded WindPath with a single Catalina 350 in Stamford, CT. The business model quickly took off and WindPath is now a national corporation with an extensive fleet of both sail and power boats. Ian got his introduction to sailing at an early age and has been active in the sport ever since. "WindPath has allowed me to meet some fantastic new people, taught me many valuable lessons, and most importantly kept me out on the water." Ian lives in Greenwich, CT with his wife Kimberly, and manages the WindPath World Headquarters in Stamford, CT.

Launched by Paul Butler, an enthusiastic sailor, WindPath of Rhode Island delivers fractional use yachting to the Newport, RI area. Paul has been sailing for over 30 years and has chartered extensively in the US and Europe. Looking for an opportunity to sail more and take friends sailing, he discovered “Fractional Sailing” as an alternative. In February 2008, Paul became the WindPath Sailing base owner in Rhode Island. Paul plans to expand his base at Goat Island, and add other Rhode Island locations in the coming years.

Ralph Schopen

Location: Atlantic Highlands, NJ
Role: Base Owner
WindPath Site: WindPath.com/highlands

An adventurer at heart, I have been Sailing, Windsurfing and Ski mountaineering in Europe and the U.S. for over 20 years. I love blue water sailing and have sailed to the Caribbean and Bermuda. In 2007 I launched the NJ WindPath base in the Atlantic Highlands. Having owned several older sailboats I know first hand how much work, time and money it takes to keep them up. When a friend of mine asked me to join him on “his” brand new sailboat, I got introduced to fractional sailing. I was so convinced by the idea of “timesharing” a yacht that I decided to open a WindPath base. It’s a pleasure to see how well the concept is working. People in New York and New Jersey have busy lives. It’s not only the financial aspect that draws them to my base but equally the carefree boating they can enjoy.

Steve Sambell

Location: Houston, TX
Role: Base Owner
WindPath Site: WindPath.com/houston

I grew up sailing board boats and catamarans on the lakes around the DFW metroplex.  Since moving to Houston in the early 90's I have raced and chartered on the bay.  Seeing the void of available high quality Catalina yachts for charter (at a reasonable price) on Galveston Bay I discovered WindPath Fractional Sailing and opened the Houston base in 2007. After retiring from a 24 year military career flying AH-1 attack helicopters and F-16 fighters, I am now enjoying the opportunity to introduce Houston sailors to the benefits of hassle free fractional sailing on the bay and beyond.
